Sustainability at SLU

Facilities Services is excited to announce the strides made in Sustainability at SLU. SLU was awarded the Bronze in the national AASHE’s STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) program. To view the full report click here. The University has significantly increased its focus on sustainability.

In partnership with the Center for Sustainability, Facilities Services hosted SLU’s first Campus Sustainability Week last October. The week featured awareness seminars, information sessions, recycling education and the release of SLU’s first Annual Campus Sustainability Report. To view, click here.

During the summer of 2012, a small group of faculty, staff and students, along with Diana Carlin, Interim Director of the Center for Sustainability and Kathleen Brady, VP Facilities Services, met to develop a recommendation for formation of a campus advisory council on sustainability.

The SLU Sustainability Advisory Council will report to senior administration and serve in a resource and advisory capacity to SLU campus units as sustainability is more fully integrated into academic, administrative and operational practices. The council is charged with supporting the Center for Sustainability in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for sustainability at Saint Louis University. The council’s first meeting was held in November. For more information, visit the SLUstainability website.

The start of the new year brought the campus-wide addition of blue exterior recycling receptacles to walkways. SLU is a single-stream recycling campus, which means all paper, metal, plastic and glass can be deposited into the same blue can. Black “landfill” cans that accept food, liquids and Styrofoam are paired with each blue recycling receptacle. Adding recycling provides the campus community with plenty of opportunities to do the right thing!

For the third year in a row, Saint Louis University is participating in RecycleMania, a nationwide inter-collegiate competition aimed to boost campus recycling activities. As part of this year's RecycleMania competition, Facilities Services sponsored an E-Waste Drive and an "Adopt-A-Spot," an internal competition in which different teams promote recycling in designated spots on campus. The E-waste Drive was hosted by Facilities Services on March 1st and provided an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and the St. Louis community to safely dispose of their electronics and appliances for free. The Center for Sustainability also sponsored the Can-Can Film Festival to showcase different recycling related documentaries and movies.
